Straining Out Doctrinal Gnats

You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel! (Mat 23:24, ESV)

And I took the little scroll from the hand of the angel and ate it. It was sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it my stomach was made bitter. (Rev 10:10, ESV)

This got me to thinking that sometimes when we focus so intently on the particular words of a passage we lose track of the overall meaning of the passage. We can be so focused oin the nuances of a passage that we never go beyond the subtleties. At times we can be so consumed with particulars that we overlook the broader scope of the text.

Let’s be careful not to strain out the doctrinal gnats while swallowing the doctrinal camels.
