Christian Song Without Christian Lyrics

One of the youth from my Youth Group asked me the other day about the song “In the Secret”/”I Want To Know You.”

The question was …

What do you think?

Personally I believe that the song In the Secret is more of a love song between a girl friend and a boy friend then it is a song between God and a Christian. Not once through out the entire song is the word God mentioned or anything that would make a non Christian know that the song is a song that is praiseing God.

I found that Challies Dot Com wrote a blog entry on this same song here, which is where i read the lyrics.

My response to her was …

Can something be Christian without mentioning God (eg: the book of Esther and the Song of Solomon)

Personally i think “undercover” Christian messages make for a very weak statement.

Can something be Christian without mentioning God (eg: the book of Esther and the Song of Solomon)

It’s one thing to do as Paul did and start by speaking to the culture of the time. But i don’t think it’s biblical to keep the discussion there and never move it to obvious Christian concepts.

What do you guys think?

  1. I think there is no such thing as a Christian song w/o Christian lyrics. The culture can’t dictate our faith, our faith must dictate the culture.

  3. I guess my obvious question to this girl would be, “How do you know the song is Christian?” What makes a Christian song Christian besides the lyrics?
